• Why use solar?
o There are lots of reasons for wanting to use solar from wanting to be more environmentally friendly, to reducing fuel bills and wanting to get their energy from a sustainable source that isn’t going to run out.
• How much hot water is supplied through a solar system?
o In a typical year a solar solution will supply 50-60% of you domestic hot water. Barton’s can provide a free quotation to design your new Glow-worm solar system, which will work in conjunction with you existing boiler whereby the two can work together in times of poor solar energy being available.
• The sun doesn’t always shine in the UK does it matter?
o Solar thermal just needs diffused light to operate, so even when the sun isn’t shining you will still be generating energy to heat your domestic hot water.
• How much money will Solar thermal save me?
o In the summer, 100% of your domestic water can be heated using solar energy, meaning your boiler will never fire up and you won’t have to use any gas which will make savings on your gas bills.
• Are there any incentives for me to have solar installed?
o In every effort to reduce the Carbon footprint the government are always introducing new incentives, for example 5% VAT is charged on all solar installation compared to the standard 17.5%.
Barton’s of Duke Street now offer a 15% discount on all controls when we fit a Glow-worm high efficient product for you,
• What does a solar system consist of?
A solar system is typically made up of 5 parts:
1, Solar Panels: This can be fitted to your roof, a flat roof or even in your garden on a frame.
2. Twin Coil Cylinder: This is normally installed in your cylinder cupboard and is slightly taller than a normal cylinder due to the two coils, one which is linked to the boiler and the other to the solar panels
3. Solar Pump: This is attached to a wall inside the house and pumps the fluid in the solar system from the solar panels to the coil in the cylinder which in turn heats the domestic hot water.
4. Solar Controller: This controls the system depending on the amount of solar thermal on a particular day. So it switches the solar off and boiler on in period of low solar thermal and vice versa. Glow-worm solar controllers also tell you how much hot water has been provided by your solar system.
5. Boiler: As mentioned earlier the boiler is still required in the colder months to work in conjunction with your Glow worm solar system when there simply insufficient sunlight available.
• Where can I see a working solar system?
o From December 2007 Barton’s of Duke Street have teamed up with Glow worm to provide you the customer with a working Solar system. Why not visit our St Helens showroom and experience the opportunities that Solar can provide for you!
